HD-PLC Alliance showcased a variety of equipments and services at “CEATEC JAPAN 2008”, the IT and electronics comprehensive exhibition, held at Makuhari Messe in Chiba city from Tuesday, September 30, 2008 to Saturday, October 4, 2008. HD-PLC-installed equipments such as flat-panel TV and uninterruptible power supplies (UPS) were on the scene, and modules and measuring equipments were also displayed. Companies aiming to enter the HD-PLC related business are becoming increasingly active; this showed that HD-PLC is not just attracting more attention among users but within in the industry as well.
1. Even Electric Vehicles Connect to Home Networks

At the main stage of the HD-PLC Alliance booth, a presentation with the environmentally friendly ‘Green Ubiquitous’ as the theme talked about the usability of HD-PLC. An electric vehicle that can connect to home networks was displayed as an example. Using an actual electric vehicle, visitors to the booth were able to see the actual video from the in-vehicle camera on the intercom display on the house door. Visitors were also able to experience the alarm that goes off when the plug outside of the house is used without permission, and example of the authentication function.
2. Indicating the Real-Time Electricity Usage

HD-PLC Alliance exhibited the Energy Saving Power Monitoring System and Energy-Saving LED Street Light Control System as the examples of systems based on ‘Green Ubiquitous’ which HD-PLC believes in. Energy saving LED Street Light Control System turns street lights into networks by utilizing PLC. Energy-Saving LED Street Light Control System is actually being used for Green Tokyo University Project, which collects real time data of the electric usage of each equipment by utilizing HD-PLC, delivering the information to users in a graph format.
3. Applying PLC for Power Control inside Buildings

Sinse Denki, Inc. exhibited an energy-saving power control system by connecting PLC to a breaker with electricity register and control instruments to operate fluorescent lights and air-conditioners remotely. These systems are not just available in new equipments, but control and management are possible on existing systems by adding external instruments.
4. TV Becomes a Home Network Hub

Victor Company of Japan, Ltd. (JVC) exhibited a flat-panel television set with built-in PLC adaptor. Network terminals are on the back, and the TV can be connected to the Internet through a PC; users can use its large screen to browse the web. The idea is to make TVs into home network hubs.
5. Displaying DVD Images on Digital TV in Another Room

A series of audio related equipment were on display, such as a set-top box with built-in PLC adaptor. Audiovox Corp. of the U.S. showcased a converter for HD-PLC and HDMI (see Note 1). Since HDMI, used for connecting digital televisions, uses cables that are limited in length, it is difficult to display the image on the TV, if it is placed far away from the player. However, once the converter coverts the signal to Internet data and sends it via power line using HD-PLC, the converter then receives it and converts it back to HDMI data again, the images from the player can be displayed on the TV set that is at a distance from the player.
Note 1) HDMI(High-Definition Multimedia Interface): HDMI is the standard for transmitting signals such as digital video and audio via a single cable. Today, many audio-visual devices come equipped with HDMI ports. Another advantage is that it only needs one cable to connect; no need for messy wiring.
6. Opening and Closing Windows using Cellular Phones

Sankyo Tateyama Aluminum Inc. demonstrated how to open and close windows using a cellular phone. This uses a built-in adaptor with web server function, currently under development. Users can check if a window is open/closed from the cellular phone screen via HD-PLC network, and can open or close a window.
