Utilizing the Authentication Function of HD-PLC for Security

Another advantage is that the authentication function can be used for theft prevention of electric power. There is no way for you to find out if someone connects a power cable to the outside plug of your home to recharge a electric vehicle, using electricity without permission. Although applying a separate converter plug for electric cars is being considered, preventing theft of electric power is impossible if the thief obtains a converter plug. Therefore, by utilizing the authentication function of HD-PLC, the outside outlet can stop the power even if someone plugs in, unless the car is pre-registered.

Users can register the indoor HD-PLC devices and in-vehicle HD-PLC unit as the adaptor’s base unit and a terminal. The power will not flow when unregistered cars connect to the plug; this prevents power being used without permission. Also, by connecting it to intercom at the front door, it makes it possible to check the status of the recharging with the monitor system of the intercom, and an alarm will go off if the recharging cable is pulled out all of a sudden.

Demonstrating the Advantage of Connecting Electric Vehicles and HD-PLC

A vehicle with these functions was exhibited at the HD-PLC Alliance booth at CEATEC. Certification using HD-PLC, monitoring images shown on the intercom display delivered from the in-vehicle camera, the display showing the status of recharging is demonstrated. Features such as giving warnings with alarms and displaying a message on the intercom display when the plug is pulled out were actually on demonstration.

Functions using HD-PLC for preventing power theft and visual monitoring system are not only for electric vehicles, but it can also be applied to 'Plug in hybrid electric vehicles', a hybrid vehicle that uses an gasoline engine which is rechargeable through household power source. Also, current vehicles with computers and sensors built in various areas have a network of transmission cables which enable the devices to exchange data.

In the future, these cables can be replaced by HD-PLC, which will reduce the overall weight of the car. This means that HD-PLC will improve fuel efficiency, and as a result, it will make a huge contribution to the reduction of environmental impact. It is quite certain that application of HD-PLC will bring numerous benefits to consumers in many areas.

The Radio Law in Japan limits the use of HD-PLC for indoor-use only. HD-PLC Alliance exhibited application examples from overseas and technology prototypes at CEATEC.
